This constituency covers an approximate area of 881.45 square kilometers and the geographic coordinates of Sabalagadh is: 24°11'58.2"N 87°12'32.8"E.

A total of four Assembly constituencies in the state of Jharkhand share borders with Dumka constituency, which are: Shikaripara, Nala, Sarath, Jama. This constituency shares an inter-state border with Birbhum district of West Bengal.

In 2014, Lois Marandi of BJP was the winner in this seat beating Hemant Soren of JMM by a margin of 4,914 votes which was 3.15% of the total votes polled in the constituency. In the 2009 Assembly elections, Hemant Soren of JMM won this seat defeating Lois Marandi of BJP by a margin of 2,669 votes which was 2.35% of the total votes polled for the seat.
