A former minister, Velumani has emerged as one of the AIADMK’s strongest faces in western Tamil Nadu, building a reputation as a grassroots leader with deep local connect. Velumani has won the seat three consecutive times, establishing Thondamuthur as an AIADMK stronghold. His tenure is often associated with improvements in civic infrastructure, including better roads, drinking water facilities and street lighting, along with initiatives such as the creation of Thondamuthur taluk, expansion of rural road networks, and establishment of government colleges.

In the 2026 elections, Velumani faces a multi-cornered contest, with the DMK fielding NR Karthikeyan and the TVK entering the fray with KP Sathish Raju.

At the same time, Velumani faces scrutiny over pending legal cases linked to alleged irregularities during his tenure as minister, which have been raised by political opponents.
