Biplab Mitra is contesting the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections from the Harirampur constituency, where he remains the Trinamool Congress’s key face in South Dinajpur district.

A veteran leader and outgoing Consumer Affairs Minister in the West Bengal government, Mitra has represented Harirampur and overseen a series of development projects in the constituency over the past five years. These include the construction of a market complex and an auditorium, a bridge at Hatnadangi, and the laying of the foundation stone for a hospital at Daulatpur, according to district-level reports.

Electorally, Harirampur has been considered a relatively strong seat for the TMC. In the 2021 Assembly polls, Mitra defeated BJP’s Nilanjan Roy by 22,672 votes, and the party maintained its lead in the segment during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, alongside a dominant performance in recent panchayat polls.

However, the 2026 contest comes with new uncertainties. A significant number of voters have been placed in the 'adjudication' category following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, raising concerns within the TMC about potential voter exclusion. Mitra has publicly flagged the issue, warning that any omission of these names from the final rolls could impact the outcome.
